Cheri Pies, MSW, DrPH

Principal Investigator

Cheri Pies is the Principal Investigator of the Best Babies Zone Initiative. Dr. Pies received her MSW from Boston University in 1976. She earned her MPH (1985) and DrPH (1993) from the University of California at Berkeley. Cheri has dedicated her career to integrating the life course perspective and an understanding of the social determinants of health into maternal and child health practice.

In 2005, Cheri was instrumental in launching a 15 Year Life Course Initiative Project in her role as Director of Family Maternal and Child Health Programs at Contra Costa Health Services. As part of this Initiative, she worked with Public Health Department staff, community partners and community residents to reduce disparities in birth outcomes throughout the county by implementing programs and projects that addressed the ways in which social and economic determinants of health influence intergenerational health across the life course.

Cheri’s research interests include designing curricula for MCH students and practitioners that integrates the life course perspective and an understanding of the social determinants of health into MCH practice, identifying approaches to measuring allostatic load, implementing and evaluating practice approaches based on life course theory, qualitative research methods and participatory action research, and lesbian and gay health issues.
